FFA: Preparing to Open and Close with a Bang

A major aspect to the FFA is public speaking. Whether it’s advocating Ag. Classes, describing livestock, or going head to head against other schools in the region. The Opening and Closings is a group competition where each group consists of six people, every individual in the group gets a role such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, and Sentinel. This scripted competition revolves around how well each team member enunciates their part with loud, confident, and enthusiastic vocals.

The Opening and Closings is happening this weekend at Cal Poly! In preparation for this event, PV’s FFA Chapter hosted a chapter level competition yesterday. This is how a couple of our FFA members are feeling about the Opening and Closings:

“I’m really sad that this is my last opening and closings, it was the first speaking competition I accomplished my freshman year and it broke me out of my shell. I want to take nothing but good memories from the FFA to carry throughout the rest of my life because it had always been a part of my life”

-Natalya Speer (12)

“My goal for this year’s competition is to demonstrate the hard work and practice I put in so my team is able to move onto the second round of opening and closings and even possibly win. I think my team has a shot of winning because we have been practicing so much.

-Yadira Barrera (11)

Panthers Not Happy with iPhone 7 Headphones

People have been waiting for a new iPhone seven for a bit over a year. With the new apple device that recently released on September 7, 2016, it's already a controversial thing to talk about. It may be nearly water proof but that's not enough to make PV's Panthers purr. Looks like the new sound system has rubbed some of them the wrong way...

"Both new iPhones  utilize stereo speakers, both at the top and bottom of the devices. Apple says they feature 'increased dynamic range.' However, those speakers are exactly where the headphone jack used to be. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus no longer feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. That means you’ll have to rely on a Lightning converter for your current headphones, or upgrade to a pair of Bluetooth earbuds. To make up for the missing headphone jack, Apple is including a pair of Lightning-connected (wired) EarPods in the box and a Lightning-converter for your 3.5mm headphone plug. The big downside: you cannot charge your phone and listen to music at the same time." -Digitaltrends.com

"The headphones look really stupid. But the quality of pictures are very good". -Sammy Arguijo (9)

"I think that the phone has better quality. It looks nice how the quality of the pictures are. But the headphones look really stupid."

-John Torres (9) (right)
"The phone should be bigger. And the headphones should look a lot better."

-Victor Renteria (9)(left)

"I really don’t care about the new iPhone because the headphones are a rip off. Who would want to spend $150 for some wireless headphones with just the plugs?" -Steven De La Cruz (10)

-Daniel Rodriguez

Photography

There are many ways people can express their emotion through art. For their weapon some may choose a pen, paint brush, or the lens of a camera. In the eyes of a camera, one can find beauty in the simplest of forms. Although some may not see it, art can be found anywhere in your daily routine. Photos capture the essence of life, with no words needed. People say a picture says a thousand words. It's up to the photographer to capture them.  Photos by Alexis Dagar
