Main Street Classic, Tonight!

-Alasaundra Silva, Tina Bulosan & SMJUHSD Public Information Office

Pioneer Valley Panthers vs. Santa Maria Saints is one of the best games of the year. Saints are the Panthers biggest rival! The Gridiron will decide the unofficial ownership of Main Street for rivals Pioneer Valley High and Santa Maria High Schools tonight on the turf.

The “Main Street Classic” events began with a noontime lunch yesterday at Cool Hand Luke’s Restaurant. Some players, coaches, athletic directors and a few administrators from the Panthers and Saints were in attendance. Although SM might have been here longer, we really know who runs the turf in this town.

"The Panthers have never lost the football game in school history," according to PVHS Athletic Director, Greg Lanthier. Fortunately, last year they gave us a good competition with a close game, 27-26 for JV. “We enjoy a great tradition of competition in all sports with SMHS,’’ added Lanthier. SMHS Athletic Director, Brian Wallace agreed, “Whatever the outcome this year, the game will prove to be an exciting and memorable experience for all.’’

This year the epic game will be held tonight at Santa Maria High. The Freshman team has already got things off to a great start, beating the Saints 41-0 at last night’s game.  JV begins at 4 and Varsity follows at 7. Come out and show your support! We’re having a blackout so wear black and bring your spirit.

"To prepare for it, I envision my team doing good things and making quick decisions for us to execute and win the game." -Noah Valdez (12)

"I feel like it's a game about heart. This game isn't like any other game, because it depends on who has the bigger heart, and we definitely do." -Miguel Guardado (12)

"I'm super duper excited because this is the game we've been waiting for to show the town how much spirit we have." -Delilah Sadat (12)

Do Those Panthers have Halos?

“The environment when our two schools meet is energetic, inspiring, and filled with good sportsmanship. It is everything that high school sports was meant to be," says Coach Lanthier (Athletics Director). Unfortunately our “friendly” rivalry has gotten out of hand in the past. We had "Santa Maria Nerd Day" banned as a result of students bringing baby dolls and toy guns. It was all in good fun, but the administration thought it had gone from fun to disrespectful. Tonight we have the opportunity to show our respectful school spirit where it counts: at the game.

Interestingly, Santa Maria HS did have a Pioneer Valley Day yesterday, September 22nd. This spirit day at our rival school has caused confusion among some Panthers. "We were told that the district board didn't want the high schools doing jinx days anymore, so our ASB wanted to follow the rules to avoid any trouble," ASB President Candice Corpuz claims. The fact that SMHS had a day dedicated to dressing up as our students is "up to them and has no relation to us not doing one."

It may be considered disrespectful at first impression on discovering that SMHS hosted a spirit day dedicated to PV. However, their day seemed to not disrespect our school. Santa Maria Saint, Josias Roland (12), believes that a crosstown rivalry is okay and that "sometimes a little playful skirmish can create unison among students with their own school spirit." With this freedom of dress code and spirit, however, situations may get out of hand and is seriously looked down upon. "I don't approve of fights or excessive violence over jokes towards each school," Roland says, "It's high school. Don't be so prideful that you'll do something stupid and negative toward your school."

I believe each school dressing up and participating in a spirit day adds to their school spirit and their high school days. Having spirit should be encouraged; disrespect and bad jokes towards the other school should not.  - Christina Bulosan
