Omar Struggles to Harness Wind at Summer Science Institute

The Summer Institute is held every year with science teacher, Riccardo Magni. He is joined by high school students who work on science projects that will get them a win in the science fair, to hopefully move on to the State Science Fair. The program takes place in the summer and four students from Pioneer Valley High School got involved. Another lucky student who attended the Summer Science Institute was sophomore, Omar Mata. He got the opportunity to attend the six-week program held at Allan Hancock College. For his project he was testing the power output of wind turbines.

“For my science project I was testing the power output of wind turbines using different shaped blades. The blade designs were biomimicry inspired, one of them was an owl blade. Another one I used was a hump back whale’s fins, then I used a dragonfly wing. We cut the blades out individually and then tested them out for ten trials each using four of each blade to compare. It was fun and I learned a lot of new things. The project and the teachers taught me a good fun time. Making the whole project was nice and it was a good thing to be involved with.” –Omar Mata (10)

Nike vs. Adidas

Nike and Adidas are one of the greatest rivals of clothing and sportswear in the world. The constant clash between the brands have created an ongoing rivalry between the companies, as well as celebrities that have signed with them. For example, Drake with Nike and Kanye West with Adidas have created their fan base to favor one over the other. Both brands are very close in what they produce, whether it's streetwear or sportswear.

In the present day when it comes to shoe quality, Nike has created a flyknit material for most of their higher quality releases like the Nike "FlyKnit Racer" retailing at $150 in which they aim to include only what is needed in a shoe, but also making it lightweight and formfitting. Adidas has also released a Primeknit material for the specialty running shoes like the "UltraBoost" retailing at $180. The shoe also features boost technology within the sole of the shoe. When it comes to the clothing, Nike has their Nike "Dri-fit" material made out of microfiber and polyester fabric that moves sweat from the body to the surface of the fabric to help keep athletes dry and comfortable. Adidas has Climacool, which similarly functions like the Nike "Dri- Fit," but also keeps heat off athletes as well. The celebrities that have made their own signature shoe have led the pop culture to side with one another. Drake created his signature "OVO Air Jordan 10s" and Kanye West with his "Yeezy Boost 350 and 750." Overall, it is your preference as to whether one is better than the other.

"I'd choose Adidas over Nike. Nike is just the brand name and Adidas actually focuses on the performance in their products instead [of] marketing like Nike does."

-Adolfo Delacruz (12)

"Nike has always been my favorite just for its clean design as well as all the black and white colorways. I just love how they design all of their products whether its clothes, shoes, or equipment." -Star Velasquez (10)

"I like that Nike is clean also they provide more of a variety of clothes and shoes. I've always been satisfied with all of their products."

-Letarian Brandon (11)

"I like Nike more because I'm not really familiar with Adidas, and don’t think I would want to for the reason being that Nike is just so good that I don’t need to try out any other brand."-Edrick Rodriguez (11)

Club Spotlight: Gay Straight Alliance

GSA is a club unlike any other club on campus. They’re a truly caring group of individuals who encourage people to be themselves and act as counselors for all those who need to someone to talk to. As soon as you step in the room, you can tell they’re a family and care for each other. GSA works hard to educate people on the LGBTQIA+ community and acts as a safety zone for everyone. So if this sounds like a club for you, stop by Ms. Kent's room: 421, Wednesdays at lunch.

“GSA brings equality and connections to students that wouldn’t be there otherwise without the club. It brings us all together one way or another. It’s a way to encourage people to be themselves and give them confidence. GSA acts as a safe zone, especially in Ms. Kent's room! A safe zone means that it’s okay for the students to talk about issues pertaining to the LGBTQIA+ community." - Co-President Charlie Darrickson (12)

“GSA brings a sense of family, comfort, and unity. It’s a place where anyone can feel safe and welcome. It’s important because there’s a lot of people who go through similar experiences and situations. GSA is a way that we can all help each other.” - Co-President Jeremiah Acob (12, right)
