Panthers Run the Bay

-Joshua Rodriguez

PVHS Cross-Country competed against various Central California teams in Morro Bay this past Saturday. 4-year runner John Gutierrez (12) came in the top 15 and earned a gold medal. Our girls' times were around 20 minutes with our first 3 being Andrea Pasillas (11), Cherry Inay (12), and Angelique Tovar (11). Much of the rigorous three mile course took place on the beach. By 12 o'clock noon the race was over and the team was very tired, but felt victorious and full of Panther Pride!

Pirates Prove to be Formidable Foe

This Friday we hosted Morro Bay, and it was an exciting game. We ended up losing 7-11, but we’ll just chalk that up to their good luck. We’ll take this loss as a learning experience, to prepare and train more. Next time we’ll get ‘em for sure, and take the win.

Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Hays

Ms. Hays is one of the most precious gems on this campus, working as a teacher. We have many great and wonderful teachers who work hard to educate their students each and everyday. We often have negative attitudes towards teachers wondering, "why must they give us homework?!" But trust me, the teachers are thinking, "there is so much grading to be done!" Teachers understand the pressure they put upon you and it's to prepare you for what may lie ahead. Don't take your teachers for granted because most, if not all, wish for you to succeed.

"My mom was a teacher, I saw how much she enjoyed her job. It seemed like something I would enjoy as well and it is. I like helping kids be successful when they feel like they can't. I haven't taught anywhere else in Santa Maria, but I used to teach in Bakersfield. The kids here are really nice and everyone is polite, friendly, and has great school spirit!"

Pet of the Week

AVA, AVA, AVA.
You had us all at your wiggly shimmy and your snorting hello....
This delicious nugget of sweetness melts every single heart in this place.
Seriously -- even the 'cat people' (you know who you are).
AVA amazes us. She remains so loving, stable, and gentle.
Our hearts thumped for her immediately -- especially since we knew she must be experiencing a great amount of pain.
You see, AVA came to us with a torn cruciate ligament, and this means she cannot bounce around with other dogs like she'd like to.
She is getting better -- but we must admit sleeping in a kennel/concrete floor is NOT an ideal sitch for a dog with this type of issue. Then, ahem, there's the weight issue. AVA likes to say she is just 'big-boned.' Hey, we're down with that!
But, it’s not so great for her legs. So, AVA'S new forever peeps will HAVE to agree to put her on a diet. Having a dog lose weight in la vida shelter is not as easy as one would think: with kennel staff constantly feeding up to 30-50 dogs at one time, medicating, cleaning kennels, etc (Yes, *this* is a good reminder of how hard kennel staff work!) it is hard to remember to always give AVA less, or to be completely diligent.
So, AVA needs a home, quickly, who will commit to her need to lose weight in order to relieve her torn ACL issue.

AVA is the *perfect* (sung operatically) dog for that 1st time pitty owner: middle-aged so all her puppy-dome is done with (she is 7 years old), mellow, calm, affectionate, connected -- AND cat friendly (wowzers!!!), and, uh -- did we mention CALM????
AVA will require her new adopters to be totally dedicated to her both emotionally and financially, should there be any issues that come up with her back-end again. But -- we truly believe weight loss will really help this rubenesque beauty heal well and live the life she so richly deserves.
AVA -- what else can we say but.....YUM!
Whoever you are, future adopter, you will enjoy every moment of life with this silly, entertaining, and pretty little chunka-hunkette low rider by your side.
Perfection? You just about got it here, folks....
To learn more about this little morsel of muscley-gooey goodness, call us at (805) 349-3435. Or, gaze at her photos on our website at www.smvhs.org.
REMEMBER: it's always a great day to adopt!
