Do Sports Get You Stressed?
Every year, science teacher Riccardo Magni is joined by students grades 9-11 for a six-week science research institute at Allan Hancock College. They research their own science project to compete in the science fair. If they win 1st place, they qualify for the state science fair where only 24 students can participate in. The students spend hours and hours to perfect their projects and, hopefully, qualify to move on to the next round. PVHS Senior, Erik Ruiz, was one of the four kids that got involved in the six-week program at Allan Hancock. For his science experiment, he wanted to find out what made sports so addicting. He experimented on people and surveyed them to find his results.
"I really enjoy sports. I really enjoy watching sports and what makes sports so addicting. I tried to find that out, because when someone is watching sports they get stressed out especially when it's a close game. My favorite sport is Basketball, so there are tense moments of a basketball game that affect your heart rate, which is the easiest predictor of stress. A faster heart rate means you're stressed out more at that moment. The previous record for amount of tests done on people was 80 and I experimented on 100 people. I showed them two different videos and used devices that measured heart rate, and then I analyzed the results.”

“There's a second part to it. I thought, if you know more about the sport, like myself, would the results be different when compared to someone who doesn’t know or care much about that sport. I found out that it wasn’t the case at all. Actually, the results showed that self-received stress affected the outcome of the experiment. So people who already knew they were stressed, were affected more, regardless if they knew the sport.

Overall, I thought the Summer Science Institute was a great opportunity to try something new and learn things I wouldn’t learn in a traditional classroom. I enjoyed the opportunity to explore my curiosities in science and get interesting results." -Erik Ruiz (12)

Club Spotlight: Cosmetology
New this year to PV is the cosmetology club, thanks to Ms. Burke. There were many boys and girls at the most recent meeting. There, Ms. Burke informed everyone that the club would be doing lots of fundraisers, including doing makeup for girls and boys for homecoming, drama, and prom! The club encourages everyone to join and show off your skills, but you must be committed and willing to go to all meetings. It promises to be an amazing experience for those who love cosmetology! All of the meetings will be in room 432 on Tuesdays at lunch starting at 12:30 pm.
Q: Why did you choose this club?
A: "Because I think makeup is really fun. If you have insecurities you can change them with makeup." -Allan Holguin (10)
Q: What inspired you to make a cosmetology club? When did you decide to form this club?
A: "To get students involved that aren't involved. I wanted to bring students together to do something that they all love or had an interest in."
Q: Do you think you'll have a job as a cosmetologist?
A: "It's definitely something I'd want to be involved in."
-Renzo Pulido (12)
Q: If you couldn't get a degree in cosmetology what would your other options be?
A: "I would like to get a minor in Spanish or math." - Jocelyn Sandoval (12)

Supreme Clothing Reviewed
"Yeah, the brand Supreme has a lot of clothing items I like. The clean style it has just makes whatever the logo is on look so good. I want the box logo hoodie even though it's extremely expensive." -Steve Romero (12)
"I don’t know anything about Supreme, I just think it’s a really cool brand and I don't blame people for making that brand popular. They have nice t-shirts, sweaters, and many other things other than clothes, and its something that has my interest. Something I would buy, wear and value because I know the brand in general is expensive." -Aaliyah Atondo (10)
Supreme is an iconic brand known across the world and worn internationally. Many celebrities are seen wearing Supreme clothing and styling it for themselves. Supreme is a skateboarding brand established in New York City in 1994 by a man named James Jebbia. Throughout the years, the brand has evolved from a local skateboarding brand to one of the most well known names in the world. Celebrities such as Kanye West, Chris Brown, Drake, and many others wear Supreme. Because of its clean and basic style, people crave the clothes and accessories for its name. For example, a basic Supreme box logo hoodie retails for $148, but is easily sold out within 1 minute of the release. In which people who were able to purchase them will resale for about 3x the retail price. They are a seasonal clothing brand meaning they would only release certain clothes and accessories based in what season it is and also the number of merchandise that is released are limited. Everything supreme can be purchased through the website, SupremeNewYork.com, or the nearest location in Los Angeles.
"Supreme produces clean and stylish clothes but a bit too expensive for me. I just think for myself that it’s too much just to be showing off the brand." - Joseph Morales (12)
"I love the way Supreme clothing embraces my skin and provides a comforting warmth like no other overpriced Honduran manufactured clothing brand." -Andrew Eisner (12)
