Lompoc Proves to be a Tough Match

Do you have high hopes for this season?

"Being a first year tennis coach, I hope the girls will work hard to improve their serves and ground strokes. It is my hope the girls will win as many matches as possible." -Ms. Osborne (coach)

Monday afternoon girls Varsity Tennis played against Lompoc here at PV. Although it was a close match the Braves came out on top with a score of 8-10. PV fought hard and won various matches but will have to fight even harder next time. Go lady panthers!

Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Ilac

Being a teacher is not as easy as a student might think. Teachers do the best they can to give us a good education and help us become a better person. Everyone, as well as teachers, go through a lot of changes. When we were young, we weren't trouble makers and we had a different way of thinking. As we got older, things changed; teachers go through the same changes and it's for the better. Some teachers change the way they teach, others change the way they think.

Every teacher we've ever had deserves an award for giving us a good lesson. They’ve helped us even though some of us didn't want their help. So thank you to every teacher out there for helping us out, and for caring about our education. We'd like to shine a spotlight on some of our great teachers here at PVHS. This week, the teacher spotlight will go to Mr. Ilac.

“I decided to become a teacher because I like helping people achieve more than they thought possible. My inspiration came from my high school history teacher and wresting coach.Yes, I absolutely love teaching and being able to change people's lives for the better. It was extremely difficult becoming a teacher, while being a first generation college student and not having any help navigating the college system. Also, I had to work 24-30 hours a week to pay for my college education. I love teaching AVID, coaching wrestling, and my favorite thing to do is being a father to my sons and daughters. Helping AVID be a school wide experience would be a fantastic thing to do, all kids could be a part of.”

Eating the Competition at Science Fair

This summer break, some seniors from various school districts of our state had the opportunity to participate in a six-week science research institute called "The Summer Science Institute". PVHS Science teacher and founder of the institute, Ricardo Magni, encouraged four Panthers to be a part of it. PVHS senior Dominique Aranda was one of the fortunate four and took the opportunity to work on her project for the science fair this spring.

For her topic she chose to study the effect of a Styrofoam diet on a mealworm. The usual diet of a mealworm is wheat bread; Dominique chose adding Styrofoam to the mealworm’s diet because the world is filled with lots of Styrofoam trash and it would be great if the mealworms could reduce it. Dominique is hoping to place in the biological science category; she will have everything prepared in time for the fair this March of 2017, and hopes to move on to the state and possibly national competition.

For those looking to participate in next year’s Summer Science Institute it would mean going in to Allan Hancock Community College Monday through Thursday from 10am to 3pm for 6 weeks. The program is paid for by the school and has lots of exciting participants and their projects.

“At first they [the worms] wouldn’t even eat the Styrofoam, but after a few days I finally saw little bite marks and I was so excited. I wanted to test and see if they’re able to safely eat it so there would be better, organic, and safer ways to get rid of some of the environment’s trash, and that would be having mealworms consume it. I really hope I win. I think it’s an intriguing topic, and I’m fairly prepared as of now; I really just need to go over my notes.”
