Santa Maria's Parade of Lights
The Rotary Clubs of Santa Maria & Nipomo, the Santa Maria Times and KCOY hosted the 21st Annual Christmas Parade of Lights this past Saturday on December 3, 2016. Our very own PVHS FFA, band, Key club and cheerleaders participated in this festive event. Our students rehearsed and practiced their annual performance, with some students being their first time and others their last time. But always keeping this tradition lively and colorful.
“Marching in the parade was really fun because you see people you know and they are rooting for you and that makes you feel enthusiastic” –Jovanny Medina (11)
“I think, especially, we must live in the moment because it’s our senior year. As an FFA leader and our last march in the parade as FFA participants, we made it our all and gave a great performance with fun and memorable times.”-Daniel Segura (12)
“Performing our last parade as PVHS cheerleads, it was bitter sweet, because we remember doing it these last years and years before that. Knowing it is our last year we made it the best for our community and school. And for future participants in the parade, enjoy the moment because you may never get to do this again” – Guadalupe Chavez (12) & Maria Velasquez (12)
My first year marching as a PVHS student in the parade was honestly amazing, and better than previous years as a junior high student. I’m looking forward to next year’s marching season.” -Brianna Ramos (9)

Japanese HS Students Visit PV; Dance Night Away
This past week, Japanese students got the opportunity to come to America and visit our campus. They got to experience many new things and we hope they enjoyed it. A dance was held in honor of the Japanese students last Friday night. There was a good enough turn out and the Japanese kids were having a blast with everyone who attended. It was a great way to say good bye.
"I helped put the dance together by helping with the music. We used Apple Music for the dance. We went on social media to get the word out about the dance" -Clarielisa Ocampo (11)
"We thought it was amazing and fantastic! Everyone is very kind and we like that your school is big. We have to wear uniforms at our school and help clean after school" -Hayato Washio, Hina Saito, Fuko Tanaka, Momo Ishioka (Japanes Students).
"I felt excited. I like it here and Emily is my favorite. She's so kind and funny. I took a science and a history class. It was difficult, but different. In Japan it's really strict, but here it's free." -Fuko, right

"I liked being her. I liked the school. There are kind people, students friendly, and the class was interesting. I love everything about the American culture. Japan is different, here it's free and friendly. Japan people are so shy, so it's different."
-Fuka, left
"It’s cool the Japanese students are here because we get to see their culture and their style. It’s crazy that they picked our school though" -Kayla Trigueiro (12)
"In the beginning, it was very exciting because I got to meet students from out of the country. It was really fun having an exchange student shadowing me around campus. I got to learn a few words from their language and that was also fun. Hayato told me a lot about himself and I got to know him better. I'm going to miss them." -Jeremiah Acob, left (12)
"American students are very friendly and they are very kind. I had a lot of fun being here. I had fun with Jeremiah and got to follow him around the school. Everyone was nice everywhere. I will miss this place." -Hayato, right
"I thought it was pretty dope to experience their culture. The dance was good so we can interact with them" -Andrew Vea (12)

Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Hoult
Mr. Hoult has been the substitute for Mrs. Martinez's history class this semester while she’s been away for maternity leave. I've had the pleasure of having Mrs. Martinez my sophomore year for World History. When I heard that she wouldn't be around for the first semester I honestly didn't believe history class would be enjoyable anymore. Mrs. Martinez is a marvelous teacher and I didn't think anyone could teach history and capture our minds such as she did. When Mr. Hoult took over for her classes he seemed like another boring substitute but as the weeks progressed I was impressed with his teaching abilities. Many of his students enjoy the class and feel as though he really cares about them and what he teaches. Many students have expressed that they are disappointed that they only got to spend a semester with him and many want him to stick around. I and many believe he belongs here at PVHS as a full time teacher. Since he will be leaving after the semester is over to substitute for another history class at Santa Maria High I knew I needed to interview him and let all the Panthers know what a wonderful teacher he is.
Q: Why would you want to teach at PVHS?
A: Of all the schools I've [taught at] I really like the environment here at PV. I think there's really good students. I think there's a great staff of teachers and administrators and I love living in California. I think the central coast is the best place to live. I'd love to teach here at PV. I also just think Santa Maria is a good community to be a part of.

Q: Why are you so passionate about teaching?
A: I moved around a lot when I was younger. That would get tough for me and I just kind of struggled as a student especially in high school. I really feel like teaching is a good way to reengage with education in a different way for myself personally. Also hopefully reengage students in their educational experience with maybe a different style of instruction. I’d like to open the minds of students and have them look at the world and think of positive ways that they can affect their own community. And like I always say in my own classes my main goal is to get all of my students to be more civically engaged, politically active, advocating for what they believe is right and the changes that they think we should make in our country.

Q: What subject would you want to teach?
A: My absolute top favorite subjects are government and U.S. history.

Q: Why those subjects?
A: Government because I’m a political science major and a policy nerd. I really enjoy looking at the structure of our government, how things are actually able to get changed, and how positive change has been made towards the progress of equality. I also really like U.S. history because I feel like it dovetails very well in government. It goes into the benefits of being American citizen and the benefits of being a part of this country. Also what have been the drawbacks in our history and how have we addressed these many challenges and inequities in our country. I feel like sharing that information with students is empowering not only for me but for the students as well.

Q: What would you bring to PVHS’s campus as a teacher?
A: I would try to bring enthusiasm for the curriculum and a welcomed place for students to express their own opinions and views. I want my classroom [to be a place] where students feel like they can express their own opinions without ever feeling like they’re going to be judged in a negative way.
“[Mr. Hoult] is the nicest teacher ever and he takes time to talk to all his students. He makes the material fun to learn.” – Arianna Scannelli (11)
“I think [Mr. Hoult] is one of the few teachers that can actually teach without making you feel overwhelmed. If I compare my experience in this semester that we had [with Mr. Hoult] to the experience I had in my AP World History class I’m learning a lot more [in Mr. Hoult’s class]. This campus has a great selection of teachers that can connect with students as teachers and I think Mr. Hoult does an exceptional job of doing that. I feel like he should remain on this campus because if they don’t keep him around they’re losing another great teacher.” Alondra Castaneda (11)
“Mr. Hoult teaches very well and makes his enjoyable. He shows funny videos that aren’t cheesy but still pertain to history. He’s a really good teacher and I’m going to miss him next semester.” Christina Bui (11)

What is your favorite Christmas movie?
Along with cold nights, parades, and holiday cheer, winter brings with it a wave of Christmas-themed movies every year. The PT’s were able to wander around campus and find out about some of our Panther’s favorite Christmas films.
Saul Rodriguez (11): My favorite Christmas movie is Elf with Will Ferrell. The movie was hilarious but it still had a good Christmas lesson by the end.
Jay Soria (12): My favorite Christmas movie is Krampus. It was supposed to be a horror movie, but it ended up being super trippy. There were living toys, and they used a dog to fight a clown.
Edson Baez (12): My favorite Christmas movie is the Nightmare before Christmas by Tim Burton. I liked it because while it was a Christmas movie, it was also a Halloween movie. Burton’s animation is really unique, and it was also cool because Jack Skellington met Santa Clause.
Alina Calderon (12): My favorite Christmas movie is Elf. Will Ferrell was super funny. My favorite scene was when Buddy was sitting with everyone at the table, then he drank a whole liter of soda, and started burping all loud.

TINSEL
"maybe if my soup wasn't cold,
my heart wouldn't be either!"
and maybe if stuttering
didn't exist, i would tell
you i loved you calmly.
i asked for tinsel on the
Christmas tree, i got red
sharpied foil adorning
my doorstep.
in big bold letters it read,
"man, if you had only
stopped shaking under
the mistletoe, i would have
loved you."
some snow flakes don't
even touch the ground
before melting, so why
should i wait at your
house to be loved?
