Issue 62 vol. 2

The students in Ms. Walter’s 3rd period Leadership class are doing a project on social media and cyberbullying.  One group is tasked with writing a script and making three videos between now and November 15.  Here is the second of the three. The first was in the PT’s 11/2/16 issue.

The project was the result of the students’ identifying what they believe is the biggest problem on campus, and finding ways to bring attention to the problem and to combat it.  Their overwhelming choice was social media and how it is used to hurt people. One group is in charge of the “PSA” videos, one is in charge of publicity, and the third is planning a campaign that will last from November 14-16 to highlight solutions. –Ms. Walters

Are You Ready for President Trump?

As you may have known by now, Donald Trump won the election this past Tuesday, November 8th. He reached 270 electoral votes before Hillary Clinton, so that makes him our new president. We all thought it was going to be a close race, but it turns out there are many more Trump supporters all over this nation than there are Clinton supporters. We may not all like Donald Trump or the issues he will fix, but America chose him because they think he will make America great again. Although Hillary lost, she still made history by becoming the first woman in history to win the democratic nomination. Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president on January 20, 2017 and will move into the White House on that same day with his family. We will definitely miss President Barack Obama and his family. Let's be honest, he was the coolest president we've ever had. Now onto new things! -Araceli Flores

"I wanted him to win because I know he will do big things and will make America great again. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton both had their pros and cons. Trump wanted to force immigrants out of the country and Hillary wanted to allow abortion. Trump won the election and now we can only hope that he will not do anything disastrous." -Nicolas Herrera (12)

"I think that this country is somewhat screwed. I didn’t like any of the candidates, but Trump winning came as a surprise to me. He is racist and against a lot of people. I hope that in the future he changes his ways and actually cares about and respects this country and everyone that lives here. The only good thing that came out of this election were the Twitter memes about the election. I wish they brought back Bernie. He should have won." -Angelina Magana (12)

"Even though Trump is as bad as he is, he isn't the worst of it. His running mate, Mike Pence, doesn’t support spending money for researching HIV. Instead he believes in shock therapy for the LGBTQ community to turn them straight." -Alan Delslay (10)

"Although I am not a Donald Trump supporter, I think the election was fair. Hillary Clinton did all that she could, but Trump came out on top. I'm not really happy with the outcome of the election, but it is what it is." -Kiara Dionisio (12)

"I don’t agree with Donald Trump winning. I was really hoping Hillary would win. I don’t want Donald Trump as president because he is racist, he makes rude comments, he doesn’t own up to what he says, he makes everything seem like it's okay and Mexicans just don't like him because of what he said about them. I am not happy at all with the results. The presidential election just doesn’t seem real." -Araceli Arroyo (10)

Ballet Folklorico Performs this Weekend

-Cacilda Ramirez

After many days of practice, the Ballet Folklorico members are finally ready to put on their first show. They have practiced every day after school and are excited to perform. The lights dim this Friday and Saturday night at 7pm at the Ethel Pope Auditorium. Mr. Hoyos, the club’s adviser, has prepared these students to put on a great show. He will be able debuting his teaching talents as this is his first year advising the club.

"It's really fun working with people from different schools. With time, we start to gain new friendships and a new family and even new experiences. I think our show this weekend will be really good. We all have been working very hard and we all enjoy what we do: dance." -Yisenia Orocio (12)

"You meet new people from different schools. You learn how to dance. I am very excited for the show because I have not performed in a long time." -Carlos Gijon (11)

"Folklorico is a really good class and a great club to join. It gets you out of your comfort zone and you get to meet new people. And as for the show, I'm really excited for the show to come. I get to see all my friends and many of my family members supporting me." -Juan Antonio (10)

"I think that we are going to do great. Everyone did a good job going to practice and learning from their mistakes and fixing them. We are working with new dances we have never done before, so hopefully everything goes great. We interact with new friends, which for us, is a great thing." -Jennifer Sores (12)

What does Veterans Day Mean to You?

"I feel that Veterans' Day is a very heartwarming day to acknowledge the men and women who fought for our country and freedom! Unlike Trump." -Jocelyn Chesnas (12)

"It means a lot to me because it was the end of World War 1. It’s a day dedicated to honor the victims and people who fought in the war for our country. It’s a very important holiday for the United States. #Mercia." -Vanessa Diaz (12)

"What Veterans' Day means to me is to respect those who fought for our democracy. They are heroes that gave me an arm, a leg, and a life to fight for our freedom. So to know that I will be following in the footsteps of veterans makes me feel glad to be born in the USA." -David Beltran (12)

"I think it is important to support our US veterans because they sacrificed their life for our country." - Oliver Peregrin (12)

"What does Veterans' Day mean to me? Honoring these brave, veteran soldiers is what the day means to me and showing respect to the families that have lost loved ones in battles. I think it's really cool that they have a day that’s dedicated to them; they deserve it. Without it, I don’t think many would even care or notice that they even existed with the way are generation is today." -Gilbert (12)
