Panthers Reign Over SMJUHSD

Man of the hour, Jonathon Salazar, #82 makes the winning touchdown.

In the beginning, Emmanuel Alcantar led us to success all the way to halftime. Alcantar made a touchdown in the first and second quarter, leaving us with a score of 14 up until the game ended. Righetti caught up in the last two quarters with two touchdowns, as well. The score was 14-14, and during overtime, it was a hard battle. In the end, it was Jonathon Salazar who made the touchdown in overtime, leaving us with a score of 20-14, success coursing through our veins, and the helmet in our possession.

Jonathon Salazar, #82, tight end and wide receiver, led the Panthers to victory  Friday night during overtime. The score was tied at 14, and Matthew Garcia's complete pass to Salazar at the end zone secured the victory, and the famous helmet, to our Varsity Panthers. "I've been doing football for seven years, and football is all I want to do. I'm better at football than anything. Honestly I just feel like I made a name for myself for the seniors, because I didn't want to finish the season without their last game being a victory against Righetti, and not taking the helmet home. [The team has] had our ups and downs, but last Friday we did play as a team to win, and we did."

“The helmet represents rivalry, the fun and tradition of high school football.  I am especially happy for our Varsity seniors who get to graduate knowing that the helmet is safely in the PVHS trophy case.  Thank you to the coaches and the Varsity boys for all their long hours this season.  I’m grateful for the spirit and excitement they bring to our school.” -Mrs. Herrera

The story of the helmet is as follows….

When PV opened in 2004 with only 9th and 10th graders, staff members left SMHS and ERHS to become Pioneer Valley Panthers.

A critical member who left his school behind was Righetti varsity football coach Greg Dickinson who committed to raise up the young football panther athletes to have a winning team.  Greg Dickinson was one of the winning-est coaches in Righetti’s history, and the longtime fans had difficulty accepting that Coach Dickinson had left the Purple Wave to take on the city’s new and upcoming school.  A helmet was created to commemorate the first varisty game with half of the helmet representing Righetti and the other half representing PV.  PV proudly took the helmet home during that commemorative year.  Each year, the winner marks it with the sticker and so the tradition continues.  PV holds the helmet in a special made glass and mirror case on display in Mrs. Herrera’s office.

"Being a cheerleader for 4 years has been one of greatest experiences in high school. I've loved having the opportunity to perform during halftimes and during rallies. I've created friendships with the girls that I've been cheering with for years. I'm sad that my high school cheering days are coming to an end, but I'll have the memories to look back on!" -Candice Corpuz (12)

"I've been playing football for 6 years now and it's bittersweet that my season has ended. I'd like to thank everyone that supported me throughout all my football seasons. I'm glad that I was able to experiences this great opportunity because it's helped me with how I handle real life situations." -Miguel Guardado (12)

"I've been cheering in high school for three years now and every year has been different. As my last year I can say that this was the best year. I learned so many different things, I got closer to my team, and I was able to become better at what I love, which is dancing. I really hope I can continue cheering throughout college, but for now I am happy with where I am." –Michelle Ambriz

FFA Walks for American Heart Association

PV FFA had about 40 students in attendance at the 2016 Santa Maria "Halloween Themed" Heart & Stroke Walk Saturday, October 29th at Waller Park. This event was the result of the leadership team's goals that were planned over the summer during the summer meetings and retreat.  This event in particular was brought to the team by Luis Soto, the community service committee chairmen.

The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization dedicated to defeating heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Their mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke — the nation’s No.1 and No.5 killers. Many thanks to the walkers, donors and volunteers who help fight heart disease and stroke.  As of today the event raised $93,150.00 dollars!
