If you didn’t know, SMHS is not actually in our athletic League. Last night around 6:30pm in Righetti High School's cafeteria, a meeting was held discussing SMHS being officially admitted to our league. A league is a group of schools who play against one another every year. Santa Maria High School is joining our league because they have the same sport demographics and want competitive equity. The point of the meeting was to explain that the reason behind this move is to give every school a shot at fair competition. They believe that right now, every school has either a constant win streak or constant losing streak. SM is just striving for equal opportunities for student athletes. There was also a mention of a potential reschedule for the meeting due to lack of attendance.

"This meeting is all about the athletic experience and having the opportunity to compete on an even playing field. Creating an association between 13 teams allows us to align our league with equality. In evaluating all of the circumstances surrounding the realignment to the Central Section, the three District ADs came to the conclusion that this would be in the best interest of our District’s student-athletes,’’ Lanthier said. “Financial considerations, reducing missed class time and unnecessary travel distance, chance to compete against more similar schools, control of local league alignments, more home play-off game opportunities, were just some of the reasons motivating the change.’’
