PV Promposals

-David Penaloza

Promposals are a very important role in the lead up to prom. It is very important because couples basically compete to get the better- maybe even the best- prom proposal. Guys go out of their way to plan the perfect proposal. They get punny posters, favorite foods, and even plan out a whole day to make sure they have it right. Sometimes it takes multiple people to make this happen. Here are some proposals that our fellow panthers made this prom season.

My proposal to Kelsey was a Victoria's Secret themed proposal. I got her two bralettes and some flowers and a sign that said, "be my angel to prom"

Fernando Ventura,  "I took Iris to the movies and after the movie needed I proposed with a big bag of smarties, a bear and flowers because I wanted it to be a cheesy as possible."

I proposed to Andrea for prom with hurdles because we both are in track. One of the hurdles said yes and the other no, so I asked her to hurdle over her answer.

Manny Perez 12

I wanted my prom proposal to be perfect .So at first I had to plan what each poster was going to say. It was pretty easy because it’s what I feel my girlfriend means to me. After that I had to go to the stores to buy 13 posters. At first I was going to use all 13 but me and my friend Damian Martinez messed up on the first one so we decided to use the first one to experiment what kind of writing we wanted to do. At first we chose box letters, but it didn’t look good so we decided to call Jonalene Lara to help make the posters and she ended up writing all the posters in calligraphy and it looked really good. Then all the posters were finished like in 30 minutes  so then the next day was the day I was going to ask her to prom so I made a plan, like I legit planned out the day on how I wanted the day to go. We were gonna go to the language fair and then eat breakfast then hang out and watch some Jane the Virgin (it’s a cool show, watch it). Then I was going to call up some of my friends to ask if they could help me with my prom proposal they said yea so then we were gonna go to the beach after I had breakfast with my girlfriend

I was gonna leave and do the final details for the prom proposal so we got everything ready it was pretty stressful and frustrating cause I was afraid it was not gonna go as planned. I was just worried and I wanted everything to be perfect. Then i texted one of her friends to pick her up and hang out with her as I set things up at the beach, so they both went adventuring around the five cities as my friends and I set everything up at the beach.

I was really nervous I don’t know why, then she showed up and everything went according to plan and after the promposal we went to Firestone. I want to give a shout out to my mom, my two brothers, Damian Martinez, Miguel Cruz, Princess Los, Chris Maldanado, Erik Ruiz, Andrew Eisner, Cesar Juarez, Cool Eric, Ruby Rube, and Stephanie Tinoco for helping me on my prom proposal and the last shout goes out to my beautiful girlfriend Daiana Medina.

PV Hosts Special Olympics

-Zander Moreno & Jonathan Hedlund

PVHS hosted the 10th annual Special Olympics High School Area Games for Track and Field yesterday, Wednesday, May 10.
Opening ceremonies were at 9:30am and the public was invited to come and watch.
More than 150 athletes participated in the softball throw, broad jump, running long jump, 25m and 50m sprints, and relay race.  The event brought out many PV students as the audience and participation from numerous student body groups like band, cheer, and student council.
This is the 10th anniversary for the event and it represents the importance of the partnership between Special Olympics and the special education programs of the local high schools, according to PVHS Special Education Teacher Jody Dowell.

“What sets this event apart is that it is for the local high school students during the school day,’’ Dowell added. “This allows for more participation and involvement of students. Since the very first event held at Allan Hancock College, the event has grown from 3 high schools to 4 high school programs and 3 county education classrooms.  Over the past several years the event has also grown to include a lunch for all the athletes and a dance party afterwards.’’

Students participated from PV, Righetti, Santa Maria, SMJUHSD’s Transition Vocational Program, Santa Barbara County Education Office, Cabrillo HS, and Lompoc HS.

''The Special Olympics matter because everyone is included and the general ed students are cheering on the special ed students. From watching the athletes we had the excitement. We had fun and that is more important than winning or losing.'' Mr. Baldwin

''I learned that everyone is unique in their own way and the events were fun and challenging. I had a good time. Other people can learn new things about the handicapped and special ed people. '' GJ Ramos 12th

''I thought that it was fun seeing everyone cheering me on. I never thought something like that would ever happen to me.'' Isaac Valdinos, 9th

''It's cool and fun and I get to see old friends. Around two years ago I was in my first Special Olympics and now I am a senior so this is my last.''

Salvador Ugalde, 12th

"It is important to run and important to play games otherwise you don't have this! [a gold medal]. That's why you should run for this golden medal and also why you should play the games, if you don't play them then you don't have a golden medal. What brings all of us together is that we have Special Olympics here and we do tons of things, we meet each other and we just hangout. You meet new people and people that you know from other schools and that's why we become friends and hang out" Brianna Cabrera (9).

"It provides a strong sense of community and a strong sense of pride, it gets everybody connected. It's an awesome reason to get together and cheer each other on. A great way to motivate each other and just have fun." Ms. Herd

How has playing baseball in high school impacted your life?

Nick Herrera: Baseball impacted my life because it's giving me so many memories to look back on when I'm older, it also kept me out of trouble and made me work with other people as a team.

Eric Nevarez: Baseball kept me physically active and it kept me out of trouble.
