Inside and Out

When I look in the mirror, I hate what I see.

My porous skin, my knobby knees.

But what you don't see is what goes on beneath me.

My boney hands clenched into fists.

Tears cut through my cheek as I hide behind a sweater

For I wouldn't dare showcase a corpse-

I mean body that no one wants to see.

People are spoon fed the broken words of beauty,

Brainwashed into believing that flawless skin and

Perfect teeth is the definition of happiness.

Your tongue curls over the word beauty

As if it didn't settle in your stomach right.

Freckles of personality disappear from your skin as you change

This physicality and that until you're left with someone who is not even you.

I know I'm not alone in these thoughts, but darling.

There is an amazing wonder in the image of you.

Learn to embrace the way your body shaped because

Your waistline does not affect your worth.

I don't mean what's in the mirror,

Because even the prettiest flower will wilt.

It's you.

It's your soul.

It's the way your eyes light up when you talk about your dreams,

Or how your voice is more than just a sound.

Every part of you screams out beauty.

It's just a matter of listening close enough.

Student Spotlight: Madison Le Clair

Madison is a student who is half French and half Mexican. She has lived 50% of her life in Santa Maria and the other half in Lyon France. Madison was born here in 2001 and her parents got married here as well. Her mother was born here and her father in France. She moved to France when she was three and has been going back and forth her entire life. Madison has a visa in France so she is able to do that with no issues. She speaks French and English fluently. People tend to think she is adopted because she is much lighter in skin tone than her mom. Madison takes pride in her style. It is unique and inspired by the Lyon culture. This is not just clothing style, but how she represents herself. Madison does not want to blend into the crowd she wants to be her own person.

She is accustomed to both Santa Maria life and French life. The food is much different in France than here. It seems in France, the food is much more rich and flavorful, and even teenagers drink wine at the dinner table. She believes people in Lyon are a bit more affectionate because when you meet people you give them a hug and a kiss while in SM that is not the case. In France they care more about old buildings that have a lot of meaning while in SM were all about new construction. Whether she is in France or SM, she loves them both.
