PV Students Arrive Alive

-Elizabeth Morales & Jheremy Casabar

Last Friday, many panthers had the opportunity to learn about how bad driving habits bring serious injury or death.  At the simulator program, they had two events going on. The first event was a video about car accidents and how it can affect someone when they are under the influence. The second event was a driving simulator where students got into a real car and put on a virtual reality headset. Drivers could choose between two programs:  the DUI simulator or the distracted driver program. The purpose of the simulation is to show how difficult it is to perform the many functions that are required of a driver in an influenced or distracted state.

I tried it out and I really liked how they set it all up. While you were "driving" in the car, they took a picture of you and printed it out on a card. Afterwards you were able to sign a pledge that you won't drink and drive, you were able to get put into a raffle to win $50 for Amazon. The lady that was at the table was also giving out pamphlets about drunk drivers and how it can affect others. In the video, it talked about how car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens and ¼ are involved with underage drinking. In the handout they gave out it said, "Please remember that if you have had any alcohol at all, to safely arrive alive, Do Not Drink And Drive."

"I feel that the presentation did help me out because it taught me that many people can die if they drink and drive. But I feel it will help more students understand the importance not to drink under the influence. I learned that drinking while driving can cause car accidents and can also kill someone." -Scheyla Zarate(11)

"This is important because many teens are involved in car accidents and it is the number one killer for people ages 19 and under. We think it is really important to get out here and have students run through the virtual reality simulator and kind of get the real-life experience behind the wheel when you are under the influence or texting. They are both really big deals. More people die from drinking and driving and texting. They are both equally important. It is about being safe with yourself and protecting others." -Jessica Harris

Student Spotlight: Chris Maldonado

PTs: So Chris, what is your academic life at school like?
Chris: I'm on a rollercoaster escalating upward, I feel nervous but am excited, I approach the top where the thrill awaits, suddenly, reality strikes, my security bar busts open and there is a malfunction with the seatbelt. I realize my doom is inevitable but make a strong effort to hold on and survive, unfortunately, this is the day of my demise... only metaphorically because this is what occurs with my grades at the end of each semester, a downfall which leads to the takeaway of my entire social life.

PTs: When you’re not at school working hard, what else do you do?

Chris: I enjoy reading, playing music, and lifting heavy weights. I am not involved in any school sport organization, but find pleasure in basketball. As for clubs, I am apart of Kiwanis Key Club International. On my free time, I like to practice my hobbies or hang out with my buddies where a majority of the time, all we do is shenanigans.

PTs: Where do you want to be in life, and what are your plans for the rest of senior year?

Chris: I want to be at the point in my life where I know I have made it and the weight on my back from the struggles in the past I have endured is all relieved from me being able to humbly say I am successful. Thankfully, it is all smooth sailing from here to the end of my senior year; all I have planned is to relish the rest of the ride through the upcoming senior activities and finally sprout my way into adulthood!

-Lorenz Dodson

PTs: What is your philosophy on style?

Chris: In terms of doing, It's not about what you do it's about how you do it. In terms of fashion, it's not about what you wear it's about how you wear it.

PTs: What is your ideal date, and who is your ideal partner?

Chris: My ideal date is not a specific plan to enact with my partner, moreover, It would not matter what we do because human connection is more beautiful than materialistic things, as long as we get lost in time and share a couple of laughs together it wouldn't get better than that. My ideal partner would be the girl I am asking to prom ('wink wink') which in a nutshell, can best be described as a beautiful, independent, ambitious, young women, or better yet PERFECT!
