FFA Citrus Team Takes State Championship

This past weekend three PVHS teams compete in the Mid-Winter State FFA finals at Fresno State University.  The tree Pruning team ended up 7th in the state.  From the two Citrus judging teams that competed at state, one team (Citrus A) ended up 9th in the state and the other had a lot of success and ended up state champions (Citrus B).  The Citrus Contest seeks to effectively prepare students for the expectations of the citrus industry.  Workers seeking careers in the citrus industry must develop a high degree of knowledge and skill in industry standards as well as critical thinking, oral communication, and plant biology.   The knowledge gained from this contest can also be applied to general fruit production.

Individually Yadira Barrera was 2nd high scorer.  Ilianna Hernandez was 3rd high scorer, and Jordan Gonzales was 4th high scorer.  I am very excited for these kids.  The hard work paid off, and I look forward to next year’s winter judging teams.   -H. Guerra

Artist of the Week: Kehlani

-Jordan Gonzales

This past week, Kehlani has blessed the music world yet again with “SweetSexySavage," her first album since signing with Atlantic Records. The album being a reference to TLC’s “CrazySexyCool," it’s clear that this album’s sound is a direct influence of iconic R&B women. February 17th was the highly anticipated date for the past months as Kehlani has been teasing fans through social media by posting the cover art, track list, and release date.

“SweetSexySavage” was her debut album to her first major label as well as her first album in general. “Cloud 19” released in 2014, and “You Should Be Here” released in 2015 were both mixtapes, even though I personally feel as though “You Should Be Here” exceeded the “mixtape” category with its Grammy nomination and bangers such as “Runnin’," “The Letter," and of course “You Should Be Here."

Moving back to the current album; not only did it have just as many, if not, more bangers than “You Should Be Here," I feel as though this album had a lot to say about Kehlani herself. There was a whirlwind of emotions throughout this album. Starting off with the Intro, which had iconic words from Reyna Biddy, this intro, in comparison to her previous mixtape’s intro, was significantly more empowering, sending condolences to those who lost her, while “You Should Be Here” was wishfully asking for those who were gone to be here. Track wise, the album ranged from ballads such as “Advice," “Everything is Yours," and “Hold Me By the Heart," to self-empowering tracks like “Do You Dirty” and “CRZY." These examples of two different themes of the album are just a glimpse. The only way you can really feel the vibes of this album and understand it is to listen to it.

“I really like “Too Much," “Do You Dirty,” “Piece of Mind,” and “Get Like” the most, to be honest, but the whole album is really good. It totally exceeded my expectations."

-Judith Zavala (12

“My favorite songs from the album are “Too Much” and “Personal” because the beat of the songs are so bay area. I’d say the SweetSexySavage exceeded my expectations. Every song Kehlani has dropped is dope. This album makes me love Kehlani even more.” -Jonalene Lara (12)

 Girls’ Varsity Basketball: Senior Night

Last Friday, the girls’ varsity basketball team honored the hard work of the seniors who put up a fight against Arroyo Grande. The score was 10 to 56 in the last quarter of the game, the girls knew they had tried their hardest and giving up wasn't their goal.

"Our record doesn't show what kind of team we really are. There are two games left, there isn't that much to do but with the team we have even if people don't think much of us, we still have a great team. Yes we actually really do work together, compared to seasons past this is probably the closest we have been. It was a great four years playing for Pioneer, anyone who wants to be involved in sports should, you get to meet a second family and that's what I have right now."

-Annalise Leon (12)

"This was difficult for me because we s

truggled to win some games, but it has been really fun to play with this team because they became my sisters along the way. Senior year has definitely been flying by, but for me, it was bittersweet because I've seen so many. It was crazy to think I was finally having my own senior night. I've spent so many early mornings and late nights for practice and games in our gym. I didn't think the last time playing in there would come that quick. Basketball is my passion because it's been my sport my entire life. It's the one thing that's always there for me for an escape or just for fun. All of it came with not just hustle and heart, but so much more."

-Ashley Joy Domingo (12)
